WHO WE ARE

QUINTA DA NASCE ÁGUAWelcome to our Quinta!

Quinta da Nasce Água owes its name to the natural water spring found on its grounds.

Originally, it was a rustic, fertile, and productive farm.

In the 16th century, it was established as an estate by Rui Dias de Sampaio, and at the end of that century, it was inherited by his daughter upon her marriage to Luís Homem da Costa Noronha. It remained in this family until the 19th century.

Around the 18th century, the renovated Nasce Água welcomed the Governor-General of the Azores, D. Diniz Gregório de Mello e Castro, to its grand country house. At this time, the estate had farmland, orchards, vegetable gardens, aromatic and medicinal herbs, vine-covered pergolas, and flowers.

Later, Brigadier Inácio de Castil Branco embraced the new trends brought by the 19th century, planting exotic flowers, constructing the large lake, creating terraced gardens with water basins, installing mills, and establishing a boxwood garden. He significantly transformed the estate, opening it to public curiosity.

The house, in its current design, was built in 1899 by Emídio Lino da Silva, in the characteristic style of that era. The estate gained new specimens of exotic vegetation, and the garden began to take on its modern form.

Some time later, it was inherited by D. Maria Luísa Baldaia and, later, by her granddaughter Elisa who, together with her husband João Coelho, undertook major repair and restoration works and converted the estate into the first Tourism of Habitation unit in the Azores.
